Amazon’s Kindle Fire started the 7 inch tablet war, but unfortunately, they might be losing this war because of stronger opponents like Google’s Nexus 7 or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 which are on an entire different level from the Kindle Fire, featuring better hardware and software.
We know that the Kindle Fire is not very kind(le) when it comes to speed and fluid animations, as it lags sometimes and that becomes very annoying, but that can be a thing of the past now, because you can update the Kindle Fire to the latest Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware.
This custom firmware was built by an XDA developer named Hashcode and it’s far from being complete, as it’s in beta stage for now and some things might not work properly or not at all, but the cool thing is that you’ll be getting that speedy Jelly Bean experience on your Kindle Fire.
The developer only mentioned about the battery charging icon as being non-functional and he doesn’t yet know all the working and non-working things, as he didn’t yet test the firmware thoroughly. He also mentioned that you should check in Settings > Battery and see if the device is indeed charging after you plug it in.
With that in mind, let me show you how to install the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware on the Amazon Kindle Fire.
First of all, you should charge the tablet to a full 100% and backup anything you might cry for in case you lost it. After you’ve done this, you’re clear to proceed, but keep in mind that we are not responsible for any damage that your device might suffer during this tutorial, but don’t worry, because if you follow everything with baby steps, nothing is going to go wrong.
- Install TWRP if you don’t have it already; this is a firmware backup and restore software that will come in handy.
- Next, download the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware and Google Apps (7-10) on your PC.
- Connect the Kindle Fire to the computer and copy the two downloaded zip files to the device.
- Turn off the tablet, reboot it normally and when the fire triangle shows, press and hold the Reboot button that shows up.
- Now you have to do a data factory reset, wipe cache and Dalvik cache from within TWRP.
- Select Install and choose the firmware zip that you’ve uploaded earlier to the Kindle Fire.
- Select Flash to flash the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 firmware and the Google Apps.
- Now you have to wait a couple of minutes for the magic to happen and once it’s done, you’ll be taken back to recovery mode from where you will select reboot system now.
If the device gets stuck at start-up, you should reboot it and if that doesn’t do it, redo the upper steps.
Now you’re running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on the Amazon Kindle Fire and can delight in the sweetness of the buttery experience that it comes with.
